Construction of the $150 million flagship solar energy park in Gonnoruwa, Hambantota District, reached 80% completion entering August 2026 under the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) renewable expansion blueprint.
The 150-megawatt solar photovoltaic installation incorporates high-efficiency bifacial panels linked via high-voltage underground transmission links to the Hambantota Grid Substation. The facility will generate approximately 240 gigawatt-hours annually, offsetting 180,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions.
Energy ministry engineers confirmed that trial grid synchronization will commence in November, supplying low-cost clean power to Southern Province industrial zones.
