Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL) announced a major infrastructure upgrade for air cargo operations at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake today, September 26, 2026.

As part of the government's national aviation expansion master plan, AASL is deploying public-private partnership (PPP) frameworks to modernize the 250,000-metric-ton capacity cargo terminal with temperature-controlled cold-storage zones for high-value perishable exports, pharmaceuticals, and fresh seafood. Airport authorities noted that alongside the ongoing Terminal 1 passenger concourse refurbishment, the modernized air cargo hub guarantees rapid customs processing and cold-chain integrity, cementing Katunayake's position as a premier logistics crossroads in South Asia.
