COLOMBO β The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) has announced a nationwide research collaboration with university physics and astronomy departments to upgrade Sri Lanka's observational astrophysics and earth-observation sensor data mapping capabilities.
The joint initiative leverages high-resolution telescope infrastructure at the ACCIMT Observatory alongside modern digital sensor arrays to collect real-time astronomical imaging, track near-earth objects (NEOs), and contribute telemetry data to global open-access space science networks.
In addition to celestial observation, the program incorporates satellite remote sensing analysis to assist national disaster management agencies. By analyzing multispectral earth-observation imagery, research teams can monitor coastal erosion, reservoir water levels, and agricultural vegetation health across all 25 districts.
Project coordinators stated that the research partnership provides young Sri Lankan scientists with direct hands-on access to advanced computational tools, satellite telemetry processing, and international scientific publishing platforms.
