The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, alongside the Uva Provincial Council, has launched an ambitious urban sports development scheme designating Badulla as Sri Lanka's high-altitude 'Sports City' hub. The project centers on a multi-stage modernization of the iconic Vincent Dias Stadium, incorporating a synthesized all-weather 400-meter athletics track, high-intensity LED floodlighting towers, and expanded spectator stands accommodating over 15,000 sports fans. In addition to the main stadium, project plans include converting disused municipal structures into indoor venues for badminton, table tennis, and martial arts, alongside upgrading local grounds for regional cricket, football, and rugby tournaments. Badulla's cool climate and moderate altitude (670m above sea level) provide an ideal environment for endurance training and national sports conditioning programs. Provincial sports directors emphasized that the Sports City initiative will position Badulla to host major national school games, regional South Asian athletic trials, and sports tourism events, generating substantial commercial revenue for local hotel and retail sectors.
