Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) and civil engineering contractor Maga Engineering have accelerated construction work on the Rs. 15 billion passenger terminal upgrade at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, Gampaha.

The expansion project features an entirely re-engineered departure concourse equipped with 36 automated check-in counters, six new aero-bridge boarding gates, and upgraded baggage reconciliation systems designed to eliminate check-in bottlenecks during peak flight banks. Aviation officials noted that the interim modernization program will expand BIA's annual passenger handling capacity ahead of the upcoming winter tourism season, while preparations continue for the resumption of the second permanent passenger terminal.
