Global new energy vehicle giant BYD has extended its Sri Lankan retail footprint to the Eastern Province with the opening of its ninth showroom in Batticaloa, located on Trinco Road and operating in partnership with local dealer Harry Traders marking a significant commercial milestone for the district's automotive sector. The Batticaloa showroom brings BYD's full lineup of electric passenger vehicles and plug in hybrid models to Eastern Province consumers for the first time under an authorised retail environment, eliminating the need for potential buyers in the region to travel to Colombo or other major cities for vehicle demonstrations and purchase. The expansion reflects BYD's aggressive nationwide retail strategy in Sri Lanka, where the Chinese automaker has rapidly established market leadership in the EV segment following Sri Lanka's import liberalisation of electric vehicles. The company has targeted provincial cities as the next frontier for growth, recognising rising income levels and fuel cost consciousness among Eastern Province consumers as key demand drivers. Harry Traders, the local partner, has invested in trained EV technicians and a dedicated service bay at the Batticaloa facility to support post sale maintenance requirements addressing a key consumer concern about after sales service availability outside Colombo. The launch event was attended by local business community representatives and officials, who welcomed BYD's arrival as a sign of growing private sector confidence in Batticaloa's economic trajectory following years of post conflict and post cyclone recovery investment.
