Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has approved a Rs. 8.32 billion emergency fisheries recovery programme in response to the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah, with Mullaitivu District's fishing communities and harbour infrastructure among the priority targets for reconstruction funding. The programme encompasses 18 priority reconstruction projects. The National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) is overseeing 10 projects valued at Rs. 7.01 billion, covering the rehabilitation of aquaculture farms, hatcheries, and cage culture infrastructure severely damaged along the Northern and Eastern coastlines. The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is managing seven additional projects worth Rs. 1.29 billion, focused on fishery harbour reconstruction, vessel repair support, and the replacement of destroyed fishing gear. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been personally reviewing recovery progress, including the distribution of replacement boats and nets to cyclone-affected fishing families in Mullaitivu and the restoration of landing facilities critical for the district's artisanal fishing sector. Mullaitivu's coastline which supports thousands of fishing families who returned to the sector after the war sustained significant infrastructure losses from Cyclone Ditwah's storm surge and high winds. Several key landing sites along the Mullaitivu coast were rendered unusable, cutting off access to the sea for an extended period during the peak fishing season. The Ministry of Fisheries confirmed that a parallel scientific assessment by the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) is evaluating fish stock recovery following both cyclone disruption and El Niño related catch declines, ensuring future rehabilitation aligns with sustainable resource management principles.
