The Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) has launched a targeted agricultural intervention in Kurunegala District, rolling out a specialized support package designed to boost smallholder productivity and mitigate labor shortages across 1,200 registered coconut farms. The initiative provides a 50% subsidy on organic-blend fertilizers formulated specifically for coconut palms in dry and intermediate zones, encouraging soil health restoration and moisture retention. In addition, 400 smallholders operating in water-scarce divisions such as Maho, Galgamuwa, and Rasnayakapura received micro-irrigation drip kits to sustain young palm growth during dry spells. To address the acute labor shortage affecting coconut harvesting, the CCB introduced a demonstration and subsidised distribution program for lightweight aluminum telescopic harvesting poles and mechanical climbing aids. These tools enable farmers to harvest mature nuts safely from ground level or lower palm heights without relying on specialized tree climbers. CCB extension officers are conducting field workshops across Kurunegala's major coconut-growing divisions, training smallholders in intercropping techniques with high-value spices like pepper and nutmeg to diversify farm income streams. Board officials emphasized that boosting yield per acre among Kurunegala's smallholders is essential for stabilizing national nut production and maintaining raw material supply for Sri Lanka's coconut processing industries.
