Construction of Sri Lanka's commercial-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility adjacent to the Anuradhapura grid substation has reached 85% completion as of August 2026, marking a pivotal step forward in national grid modernization. The project forms part of the Ceylon Electricity Board's (CEB) national energy storage program covering 16 key transmission substations. Designed with high-density lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology, the Anuradhapura facility will store excess solar electricity generated by utility solar parks and rooftop systems across the North Central Province during peak daytime hours. The stored energy will be dispatched into the national grid during peak evening demand hours (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM), reducing reliance on expensive thermal oil power plants and preventing grid frequency instabilities caused by solar intermittent generation. Site engineers confirmed that high-voltage power conversion systems and grid-side transformer banks are fully installed, with pre-commissioning testing scheduled for early September 2026. Energy analysts highlighted that the Anuradhapura BESS installation will unlock further private solar power integration in the dry zone by absorbing grid capacity bottlenecks that previously limited renewable interconnection licenses.
