A specialized conservation team under the Galle Heritage Foundation has commenced extensive restoration and desilting operations on the ancient underground drainage network beneath the UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort.

Constructed in the 17th century, the intricate brick-and-stone masonry conduits rely on oceanic tidal shifts to self-flush urban runoff into the bay. Following localized pavement subsidence along Church Street during recent downpours, civil engineers and archaeological conservators are clearing centuries of silt deposits to protect the structural integrity of historic residences and fortress ramparts ahead of the peak international travel season.
