The Department of Agriculture has launched a comprehensive agro-forestry and sustainable land management program across Kegalle District, distributing over 50,000 certified fruit tree saplings to smallholder farmers. The program focuses on high value fruit varieties suited to Sabaragamuwa's wet zone climate, including rambutan, durian, mangosteen, and passion fruit, encouraging farmers to establish multi-tier agro-forestry gardens. Because heavy rainfall on steep slopes causes severe topsoil erosion across Kegalle's agricultural holdings, the initiative incorporates bio engineering soil conservation techniques, providing subsidised vetiver grass slips and stone bund construction grants. Agriculture extension officers are conducting community workshops on organic composting, natural pest control, and drip irrigation for fruit orchards, assisting farmers to achieve higher commercial yields. Officials highlighted that expanding fruit tree canopy cover combats soil erosion and slope instability while providing smallholders with lucrative secondary income streams from high demand tropical fruits.
