The Department of Archaeology, in collaboration with the Atamasthana Sacred City Development Committee, completed conservation treatments and stone pathway paving around the sand terrace (Salapathala Maluwa) of Ruwanwelisaya Maha Stupa today, September 23, 2026.

Using traditional lime-sand mortars and heat-dissipating natural stone slabs, conservators restored weather-worn pavement joints that had deteriorated due to extreme sun and monsoonal moisture. Monastic leaders noted that the completed walkway provides a safe, non-slip promenade for barefoot pilgrims during poya observances and sacred circumambulation rituals.
