The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level severe weather advisory for Colombo and adjacent Western Province districts today, September 21, 2026, warning of widespread heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm.

Meteorologists noted that while a developing low-pressure system over the Andaman Sea in the Bay of Bengal will not make direct landfall over Sri Lanka, the associated westerly wind inflow is channeling deep moisture plumes across the southwestern coastal belt. Colombo municipal authorities and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) have urged residents in flood-vulnerable urban pockets to exercise caution against flash flooding and localized wind gusts.
