The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) has officially handed over a newly constructed 42-kilometer smart electric fence to community farmer committees in Galenbindunuwewa and Kahatagasdigiliya, Anuradhapura today, September 27, 2026.

Engineered to mitigate chronic human-elephant conflict (HEC), the perimeter fence features automated sensor alerts that notify local ranger stations and village watch teams via SMS if tree branches fall on the wires or voltage drops. Village committees have undergone specialized training to handle routine bush clearing and battery maintenance, ensuring long-term operational sustainability. Wildlife ecologists reported that seasonal elephant movement corridors have been preserved outside agricultural perimeters, preventing crop raids while avoiding animal displacement.
