COLOMBO — The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has officially initiated the constitutional process to fill the vacancy created in Parliament following the formal resignation of National List Member of Parliament M.S. Abdul Waheed.

Parliamentary authorities confirmed that MP Abdul Waheed, representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), submitted his letter of resignation to the Secretary-General of Parliament with official effect from September 14, 2026. In accordance with Article 99(13)(a) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, the Secretary-General formally notified the Chairman of the Election Commission regarding the existence of the vacancy.

Under statutory electoral procedures, the Election Commission has requested the General Secretary of the SLMC to nominate a candidate from their recognized party list to fill the vacant National List slot. Once the political party submits its formal nomination, the Election Commission will publish an extraordinary gazette notification formally declaring the appointed member to Parliament.

The administrative transition occurs alongside ongoing deliberations by the Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms, which is currently reviewing legislative frameworks and Provincial Council electoral mechanisms to enhance voter representation nationwide.
