The Cabinet of Ministers approved a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework to commercialize and expand operations at the historic Kurunchathivu Saltern located at Elephant Pass in northern Kilinochchi District. Following recent infrastructure modernization—including upgraded evaporation pans, modern mechanical harvesters, and iodine processing facilities—the facility is preparing to enter full-scale commercial production. The international tender seeks strategic partners to scale annual table salt and industrial chemical output. Regional economic analysts note that restoring the Elephant Pass salt works to maximum output will satisfy national commercial demand, reduce import expenditure, and create sustainable manufacturing employment across Northern communities.
