As international tourist traffic to the UNESCO World Heritage site continues to rise, the regulations mandate the use of traditional lime mortar, terracotta roof tiles, and timber fenestrations, while strictly prohibiting non-permeable modern cement renders that trap moisture inside centuries-old coral-stone walls. Heritage authorities stated that maintaining strict architectural authenticity is vital to preserving Galle Fort's status as Asia's best-preserved living European colonial fortress.
