Agricultural scientists at the Horticultural Crop Research and Development Institute (HORDI) in Gannoruwa, Kandy, announced the successful completion of field trials for four new climate-resilient hybrid vegetable lines today, September 24, 2026.

The newly certified varieties—including disease-tolerant capsicum, flood-resilient highland tomatoes, and high-yield bush beans—demonstrated superior resistance to monsoonal root rot and sudden dry spells during multi-season evaluations. Extension officers from the Department of Agriculture are currently distributing verified seed stock to regional farmer collectives across Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Matale, bolstering smallholder harvest reliability amid changing climate patterns.
