The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing has announced a national capital allocation of Rs. 44 billion for the 2026 National Housing Development Programme, targeting the construction of 30,000 permanent homes for low-income families across Sri Lanka. In Kegalle District, the programme is being executed across all 11 Divisional Secretariat Divisions, providing direct financial grants disbursed in four construction stages to eligible rural and estate sector families. The project addresses acute housing deficits in hilly rural divisions such as Aranayaka, Bulathkohupitiya, and Yatiyantota, prioritizing families relocated from landslide hazard zones demarcated by the NBRO. Technical officers from the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) provide free engineering blueprints designed specifically for hill-country terrain, incorporating reinforced foundations and rainwater harvesting storage tanks. Housing Ministry officials confirmed that progress is monitored via a mobile digital verification system, ensuring funds reach beneficiaries directly without administrative delays.
