A $1.4 million (AUD 2 million) climate-smart agricultural assistance program was launched in Nuwara Eliya by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Australian Government. The initiative addresses recent monsoon weather volatility by distributing climate-resilient seed stocks, establishing drip-irrigated poly-tunnel nurseries, and training hill-country farmers in soil erosion control. Nuwara Eliya supplies over 65% of Sri Lanka's high-altitude vegetables, including carrots, leeks, and potatoes. Agricultural experts stated the modern seed nurseries will mitigate crop loss and stabilize wholesale vegetable prices across Dambulla and Manning wholesale markets.
