The government has issued an Extraordinary Gazette updating the master plan for the Anuradhapura Sacred Area, establishing a modern legal framework to safeguard archaeological monuments and ancient hydraulic eco systems while regulating urban development. The updated master plan updates zoning regulations first enacted in 1984, establishing strict non development protection zones (Zone A) around core Solosmasthana heritage sites including the Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, and Jetavanaramaya. Commercial facilities and tourist services will be systematically clustered into peripheral buffer zones equipped with eco-friendly infrastructure. Concurrently, the Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has launched a dedicated conservation initiative at the Anuradhapura Western Monastery Complex. The project focuses on preserving ancient Padhanaghara (double platform meditation structures) utilized by forest monks during the Anuradhapura Kingdom era. Archaeological teams are employing non-invasive digital scanning and specialized stone conservation techniques to stabilize ancient granite structures without altering historical integrity. Heritage officials emphasized that balancing sacred site preservation with sustainable visitor management is essential for securing UNESCO World Heritage standards and preserving Anuradhapura's spiritual legacy for future generations.
