Under new presidential administrative directives, all agricultural irrigation management units across Monaragala District have been consolidated under a unified district-level coordination body to optimize water distribution and streamline farm gate economic planning. The unified irrigation unit brings together officers from the Department of Irrigation, Agrarian Development Department, and Mahaweli Authority to map all major, medium, and minor tank cascades across Wellawaya, Buttala, and Bibile divisional secretariat areas. Using satellite spatial mapping, the unit tracks seasonal water storage in key reservoirs such as Handapanagala, Senanayake Samudraya, and Muthukandiya, enabling precise seasonal water allocation plans tailored for both paddy and commercial cash crops. Concurrently, the unit published official production cost reports for the 2026 Yala season, establishing transparent cost benchmarks for fuel, seed, fertilizer, and harvesting to support government paddy procurement pricing calculations. Farmer organization representatives welcomed the administrative consolidation, stating that unified water management eliminates inter agency friction while ensuring fair water rights for downstream smallholders during dry season spells.
