COLOMBO — Sri Lankan track and field celebrated a historic international milestone as javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga clinched the gold medal at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, recording a sensational winning mark of 91.09 meters.

The monumental throw establishes Tharanga among the elite upper echelon of world javelin throwers and solidifies his position as a prime medal favorite for upcoming continental and global athletic championships.

Following his return to Colombo on September 15, the Ministry of Sports and Athletics Sri Lanka moved swiftly to resolve transit baggage damages to his competition javelins, pledging immediate state funding to procure competition-grade, custom-weighted javelins and provide specialized biomechanical coaching support.

Athletic officials noted that Tharanga’s breakthrough triumph has energized the national track and field community, proving that Sri Lankan field athletes can compete and dominate on the world's most demanding sports stages.
