The Department of Irrigation and the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) issued heightened flood advisories for the Kalu Ganga basin across the Kalutara District today, September 23, 2026.

Triggered by peripheral convective clouds from a Deep Depression over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm was recorded across upstream catchments in Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya, Horana, and Millaniya. Hydrologists monitoring water gauges at Putupaula and Ellagawa stations reported rising river discharge rates and urged residents in low-lying river terraces and flood plains to take precautionary safety measures against flash inundation.
