The Kalutara Bodhi Trust, which oversees the iconic Kalutara Bodhiya and hollow stupa on the banks of the Kalu Ganga, has introduced comprehensive environmental conservation guidelines to safeguard the sacred precinct from riverside erosion and high tourist traffic.

The initiative integrates natural rock armor revetments along the riverbank to mitigate tidal wash from high-volume monsoon water flows, alongside dedicated zero-waste oil lamp disposal units and biodegradable offering zones. Heritage custodians highlighted that the sustainable enhancements ensure the serene spiritual atmosphere of this historic pilgrimage site is preserved for future generations while actively protecting the riverine ecosystem.
