Estate managers and smallholder coconut farmers across Kurunegala District , the heartland of Sri Lanka's famed 'Coconut Triangle' are experiencing severe operational headwinds caused by a worsening shortage of skilled tree pluckers and post weather harvesting bottlenecks that have disrupted supply to regional processing hubs. Industry surveys conducted in Kuliyapitiya, Giriulla, and Narammala reveal that the scarcity of manual pluckers has forced growers to extend harvest intervals from the standard 45 day cycle to over 65 days. The prolonged harvest delay results in nut deterioration on the tree, lower copra turnout, and increased vulnerability to pest infestation, diminishing overall crop value for smallholders who manage over 70% of the district's coconut acreage. The problem was compounded by early 2026 heavy rain systems that submerged plantation access tracks, creating temporary transport bottlenecks that prevented harvested nuts from reaching regional auction centres like Kuliyapitiya despite high tree yields. The resulting supply friction created artificial market scarcities and price volatility for coconut oil millers and desiccated coconut exporters. Kurunegala Plantations Limited and private grower associations have urged the Ministry of Agriculture and the Coconut Cultivation Board to accelerate research into affordable, farmer friendly mechanical harvesting tools and to expand subsidised moisture retention and fertilizer packages for smallholders. Processing sector representatives stressed that maintaining Kurunegala's coconut output is vital for national food security and Sri Lanka's $800 million coconut export economy, calling for a coordinated national policy addressing agricultural labor dynamics in the North Western Province.
