Ampara District has received a landmark LKR 22 billion capital allocation under the 2026 District Budget, earmarked for an ambitious programme of road construction, bridge rehabilitation, irrigation canal repairs, and public building development — the largest single-year infrastructure investment the district has seen in the post-war era. The Road Development Authority is actively progressing tender processes for multiple road surfacing, drainage improvement, and pedestrian walkway construction contracts across Ampara's divisional secretariat areas, with priority given to rural connectivity links that have historically limited agricultural market access and emergency mobility for farming communities in the district's interior. Two landmark public building projects are progressing as flagship components of the capital programme. The Nintavur Cultural Centre — estimated at LKR 945 million — has resumed construction with a 2026 budget allocation of LKR 300 million and is targeted for completion in December 2027. The Ampara Multi-Purpose Town Hall, a LKR 1.74 billion project that will provide the district with a modern civic facility, is scheduled for completion in December 2028. Irrigation canal reconstruction is a critical infrastructure priority, with the Alla-Mavil Aru Govi Vyaparaya canal rehabilitation project among the schemes receiving urgent attention following damage sustained during Cyclone Ditwah. Restoring irrigation water flow to affected paddy lands is central to the district's agricultural recovery strategy for the 2026-2027 Maha cultivation season. District Secretariat officials have been directed to ensure efficient utilisation of the budget allocation through quarterly progress reviews, with the District Development Committee chaired by the Governor serving as the accountability mechanism for timely project delivery.
