Construction activities on the long-awaited Lower Malwathu Oya Multi-Sector Development Project (LMMSDP) in Anuradhapura District have entered an accelerated phase following the release of additional government capital allocations in August 2026. The multi-purpose reservoir scheme, situated across the border of Anuradhapura and Mannar districts, involves constructing a major impoundment dam across the Malwathu Oya to store 169 million cubic meters of water. Once complete, the reservoir will deliver guaranteed year-round irrigation water to over 35,000 acres of paddy and commercial field crops in both districts. In addition to agricultural benefits, the dam will mitigate catastrophic seasonal flooding that periodically inundates low-lying villages and transport routes downstream along the Malwathu Oya basin during the northeast monsoon. Project management authorities confirmed that work on the main earth dam embankment and spillway structures is proceeding rapidly, alongside a structured resettlement and compensation program for displaced families within the reservoir inundation zone. Agriculture officials emphasized that LMMSDP will serve as a vital water reserve for North Central Province farmers facing increasingly erratic rainfall patterns brought on by regional climate change.
