The Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka has completed the installation of an automated water telemetry and sluice gate control system across the Parakrama Samudra reservoir complex in Polonnaruwa, modernizing water management for North Central Province agriculture. The 5,900-acre ancient reservoir, constructed by King Parakramabahu I, remains the primary water storage facility feeding thousands of acres of paddy fields across the Polonnaruwa district. The new automated system uses ultrasonic water level sensors and automated motorized sluice controls to monitor real-time reservoir capacity and discharge rates. Data from the telemetry network feeds directly into the Mahaweli System D central water management portal in Dehiattakandiya, allowing engineers to dynamically adjust canal releases based on local rainfall forecasts and crop growth stages. The system eliminates manual gate operation errors, prevents unnecessary water wastage during heavy downpours, and maintains optimum storage levels ahead of dry season cultivation cycles. Irrigation engineers confirmed that similar telemetry upgrades will be rolled out across the Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs, creating an integrated digital water management grid for the entire Polonnaruwa agricultural basin.
