The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation has launched a specialized agricultural expansion program in Hingurakgoda, promoting commercial cultivation of traditional Sri Lankan heirloom rice varieties such as Suwandel, Kalu Heenati, and Pachchaperumal. The program targets 2,500 acres of paddy land across the Hingurakgoda and Elahera agricultural divisions, equipping farmers with certified traditional seed paddy, organic fertilizer packages, and specialized technical training in low-water systemic rice intensification (SRI) methods. Traditional rice varieties possess natural resistance to pest infestations, extreme heat, and drought conditions, requiring significantly lower chemical input costs while fetching premium prices in domestic urban markets and export channels. To support field operations, the Department of Irrigation has initiated canal concrete lining and sluice gate repairs along secondary distribution channels in Hingurakgoda, improving water delivery efficiency to participating farms. Agronomists highlighted that expanding heirloom rice cultivation in Polonnaruwa preserves invaluable agricultural biodiversity while positioning local farmers to capitalize on growing global demand for organic, low-glycemic health grains.
