COLOMBO β€” The Ministry of Transport and Sri Lanka Railways have finalized the prioritization framework for comprehensive suburban rail corridor modernizations, targeting high-frequency electrified passenger transit across Greater Colombo.

Under the revised urban mobility blueprint, technical teams will focus immediate infrastructure investment on three high-density corridors: the Main Line from Maradana to Ragama, the Coastal Line from Maradana to Panadura, and the Kelani Valley Line from Maradana to Makumbura Multimodal Transport Hub.

Planned upgrades include dual-track electrification, modern automated signaling arrays, grade separation at congested road intersections, and station platform enhancements for rapid boarding. The transition to electrified suburban train units is expected to reduce commuter travel times by up to 40% while slashing fossil fuel consumption and emissions.

Railway planners confirmed that procurement processes for signaling technology and rolling stock modernization are being expedited in coordination with international development finance partners.
