KALUTARA — Construction on the landmark Rs. 73 billion Kalu Ganga Water Supply Project has reached critical milestones, with engineers entering the advanced testing phase of the new regional water treatment plant and transmission mains.

Funded through bilateral development partnerships and national capital budgets, the high-capacity water scheme is engineered to extract and purify 140,000 cubic meters of water daily from the perennial Kalu Ganga river basin. The project expands clean, piped drinking water infrastructure to over 250,000 families across Kalutara, Horana, Bandaragama, Kesbewa, and southern suburban corridors of Colombo district.

National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) project managers confirmed that the facility incorporates advanced multistage filtration and automated chlorine dosing systems to guarantee stringent World Health Organization (WHO) potable water purity standards.

The infrastructure also strengthens regional climate resilience by mitigating ground-water salinity intrusion during dry spells, ensuring uninterrupted clean water distribution to homes, hospitals, and local industrial zones throughout the year.
