The Ministry of Health has accelerated construction on the new five-storied surgical theatre and inpatient ward complex at Monaragala Teaching Hospital, investing in a major healthcare infrastructure expansion for Uva Province's eastern district. The modern complex incorporates six specialized operating theatres, an 8-bed intensive care unit (ICU), advanced radiology diagnostic suites, and expanded inpatient wards providing 250 additional beds for emergency, surgical, and pediatric care. Previously, patients requiring complex surgical procedures or intensive care treatment in Monaragala were frequently transferred over 90 km to Badulla General Hospital or Colombo, causing dangerous travel delays during critical medical emergencies. Site engineers confirmed that structural concrete casting for the top floors is complete, with interior MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) installations and medical gas pipeline fitting currently underway. Hospital administrators noted that upgrading Monaragala to a fully equipped teaching hospital facility will also attract specialist consultants, medical interns, and nursing staff to reside and serve in the region.
