The resonant acoustic timbre of seasoned bamboo flutes and the rhythmic beats of the mridangam resonated through the Mulliyawalai Community Cultural Hall today, October 1, 2026, as the Mulliyawalai Arts Society inaugurated its intensive three-day Carnatic Youth Masterclass.

Conducted in collaboration with visiting senior instrumentalists from the Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Jaffna, the residential workshop enrolled 80 talented music students and junior school instrumentalists from across Maritimepattu, Oddusuddan, and Mankulam. The masterclass provided advanced instruction in classical South Indian music theory, focusing on raga bhava interpretation, intricate gamaka ornamentation, and complex tala rhythmic structures such as Adi and Rupaka talas.

During practical breakout sessions, flute students practiced breath control and tonal modulation across traditional ragas including Mayamalavagowla, Kalyani, and Mohanam, while percussion students honed their hand-striking dynamics on the mridangam, mastering complex rhythmic mathematical arrangements known as korvais and theermanams. Veteran master musicians emphasized the spiritual and intellectual discipline embedded within classical acoustic music, explaining how traditional instruments develop cognitive focus and emotional poise in youth.

Mulliyawalai Arts Society president T. Navaratnam stated that providing rural children with access to distinguished classical masters preserves ancient indigenous musical traditions that faced disruption in past decades. The masterclass will culminate in a gala public youth ensemble performance on Sunday evening, providing young musicians with an inspiring public stage to showcase their artistic accomplishments to family and community elders.
