The National Building Research Organization (NBRO), in partnership with the Road Development Authority (RDA), has expanded slope stabilization and landslide mitigation works along high risk highway cuttings in Kegalle District. Kegalle's steep hilly terrain and weathered soil geology make its major transport corridors, including the Colombo–Kandy road (A1) and Karawanella–Ruwanwella roads highly susceptible to sudden landslides and rockfalls during intense monsoonal rains. Engineering teams are deploying advanced soil nailing, high tensile wire mesh anchoring, and shotcrete concrete spraying techniques across identified unstable slopes in Mawanella, Kadugannawa pass approaches, and Polgahawela bypass cuttings. Deep sub surface horizontal drainage pipes are also being drilled into hill slopes to relieve hydrostatic pore water pressure, preventing deep seated earth slips before heavy downpours occur. NBRO geotechnical engineers confirmed that real time tiltmeter sensors and rain gauges have been installed along stabilized cuttings, feeding automated early warnings to local disaster management units during storm events.
