The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) has launched a technological modernization drive at its Ratnapura regional laboratory, deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI) optical spectroscopy tools and digital blockchain provenance tracking to verify gemstone authenticity.
The advanced AI diagnostic system analyzes microscopic internal inclusion patterns, element concentration ratios, and spectral signatures of rough and cut sapphires. The technology rapidly distinguishes natural untreated Ratnapura sapphires from synthetic stones, beryllium-diffused gems, or lab-grown imitations within minutes.
Verified gemstones receive a digital passport secured on a blockchain ledger, containing high-resolution 3D imagery, carat weight metrics, and geological origin coordinates linked directly to licensed Ratnapura mining pits.
Industry experts emphasized that AI-driven certification addresses international buyer concerns over gemstone provenance and artificial enhancement, enabling ethical Sri Lankan miners to command premium international market prices.
The NGJA plans to extend AI testing services to small-scale miners and lapidary artisans across Sabaragamuwa Province, democratizing access to world-class gem authentication.
