The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has accelerated implementation of the 'A Place of One's Own – A Beautiful Life' national housing scheme across Puttalam District, delivering direct financial assistance to low-income families constructing permanent residential housing. Supported by a dedicated district allocation of Rs. 491 million, the programme targets 491 eligible beneficiary families across divisional secretariat areas including Kalpitiya, Vanathavilluwa, Mundalama, and Dankotuwa. The financial aid is disbursed in staged tranches tied to foundation, masonry, roofing, and finishing milestones. Priority has been granted to families currently residing in temporary thatch structures, female-headed households, and estate workers without secure land tenure. In addition to cash grants, the NHDA provides standardized low-cost climate-resilient architectural blueprints and technical supervision. Local local government authorities are co-funding water connection subsidies and electrical grid extensions for new housing clusters established under the scheme. Beneficiaries expressed profound relief as permanent brick and concrete construction replaces vulnerable temporary housing ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, marking a major improvement in rural living standards.
