The Sri Lanka Navy mobilized seven emergency disaster response and relief flotillas across the Galle District today, September 26, 2026, as water levels along the Gin River surged past minor flood warning marks.

Positioned across flood-affected zones in Mapalagama, Thawalama, Hiniduma, and Udugama, naval divers and marine relief units utilized rigid-hull inflatable dinghies to evacuate marooned farming families, transport essential medical supplies, and secure critical river crossings. With upper mountain catchments receiving over 100mm of persistent rainfall, the District Disaster Management Centre remains on round-the-clock standby to deploy emergency relief dry rations and assist rural schools serving as temporary safety shelters.
