The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) extended its Level 1 landslide early warning for vulnerable slope areas across the Gampaha District today, September 22, 2026, valid through 4:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Scientists at the NBRO Landslide Research and Risk Management Division explained that although a developing atmospheric depression over the central Bay of Bengal remains offshore, its counter-clockwise circulation is drawing high-velocity equatorial moisture over western Sri Lanka. Soil moisture telemetry in Attanagalla, Mirigama, and Divulapitiya indicates localized saturation levels nearing 75%, prompting geologists to maintain continuous slope stability surveillance.
