GAMPAHA — The coastal shores of Pitipana in Negombo came alive with radiant color and festive energy as hundreds of handcrafted aerial kites took to the breeze for the annual Pitipana Kite Festival.

Attracting families, youth groups, and tourists from across the Gampaha district, the open community event featured competitive displays of traditional Sri Lankan snake (Naya), peacock (Monara), and modern aerodynamic 3D box kites designed by local coastal artisans.

Alongside the aerial acrobatics, the grounds featured live DJ sets, interactive beach volleyball tournaments, and pop-up food stalls serving fresh seafood rotti, seasoned cassava chips, and tropical fruit smoothies.

Community organizers highlighted that grassroots cultural festivals offer safe, healthy outdoor recreation for youth while celebrating coastal Sri Lanka’s rich community traditions.
