Construction crews began breakwater and dredging operations at Pesalai in Mannar District following the formal launch of the Pesalai Fishery Harbour Development Project. Supported by World Bank coastal infrastructure funding, the modern harbour facility includes protective breakwaters, high density berthing jetties for multi day travelers, a ice manufacturing plant, and solar powered cold storage units. The project resolves long standing berthing shortages faced by Mannar coastal fishing communities. Fishery cooperative leaders praised the development, emphasizing that modern onshore processing facilities will reduce post harvest losses and raise export valuations for blue swimmer crab and sea cucumber harvests.
