The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) in partnership with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has officially instituted upgraded eco-snorkeling trails and live reef interpretive tours at Pigeon Island National Park off Nilaveli.

As the dry east-coast marine season reaches optimal water clarity, park authorities introduced color-coded floating perimeter buoys that guide snorkelers away from sensitive shallow staghorn and brain coral formations. Licensed boat tour operators now conduct mandatory five-minute pre-dive conservation briefings, reminding travelers not to touch marine life or stand on live reefs. Marine biologists report that the strictly regulated visitor zoning has encouraged healthy regrowth of juvenile reef fish, blacktip reef sharks, and sea turtles, maintaining a world-class recreational marine park.
