The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Rambukkana, Kegalle District, celebrated its 51st anniversary of operation with the inauguration of upgraded animal welfare facilities and new interactive visitor programs designed in accordance with international humane conservation standards. The Department of National Zoological Gardens ceremonially opened the 'Nidahas Ali Arana' (Free Elephant Sanctuary), a spacious natural forest enclosure providing adult male elephants with unchained roaming area, particularly during musth periods. In addition, the orphanage introduced a guided 'Walk with an Elephant' experience in July 2026, allowing international and domestic visitors to accompany elephants along natural walking trails in a safe controlled setting without riding or physical restraint. Located 2 km from Rambukkana Railway Station, Pinnawala remains one of Sri Lanka's top international tourism destinations, drawing thousands of daily visitors to observe herd bottle-feeding and twice-daily baths in the Maha Oya River. Wildlife officials emphasized that Pinnawala's evolution toward a research, breeding, and sanctuary model aligns with modern eco-tourism expectations while maintaining vital protection for orphaned and rescued Asian elephants.
