Sri Lanka Railways has completed initial technical feasibility evaluations for the proposed double tracking of the 13 km railway corridor between Polgahawela Junction and Kurunegala Station, a strategic track expansion project aimed at resolving one of the main line's most acute operational bottlenecks. Currently, the single track section between Polgahawela and Kurunegala forces long delays for express passenger trains, intercity services, and freight trains traveling between Colombo, Jaffna, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee. Crossing delays at intermediate stations frequently cascade across the entire northern and eastern rail network, reducing schedule reliability for tens of thousands of daily commuters. The double tracking project will construct a parallel broad gauge track alongside the existing line, upgrade signaling systems to electronic interlocking standards, and reconstruct three major rail bridges over local tributaries. Once operational, rail capacity on the Polgahawela–Kurunegala sector will double, enabling Sri Lanka Railways to introduce frequent suburban commuter shuttle services connecting Kurunegala directly to Colombo Fort. Transport planners highlighted that double tracking will also facilitate bulk freight transport, allowing agricultural produce, cement, and fuel to move seamlessly between the Port of Colombo and distribution depots in Kurunegala. The Ministry of Transport intends to present the final project plan to the Cabinet for funding approval later this year, with initial land clearing along the railway right-of-way already designated under railway land management protocols.
