Under the national Praja Shakthi poverty alleviation initiative, government authorities have commenced the rollout of 786 grassroots community development projects totaling nearly Rs. 1 billion across the Nuwara Eliya District.

Targeting estate sector families and smallholder farming villages in Walapane, Hanguranketha, and Maskeliya, the funds provide direct grants for micro-scale greenhouse vegetable cultivation, dairy cattle shelters, and artisan tea processing units. Project coordinators noted that combining financial capital with business mentorship empowers vulnerable households to build independent revenue streams and overcome high living costs.
