The Sri Lanka government has approved a Rs. 950 million district wide infrastructure development plan for Vavuniya, marking one of the largest single tranche capital allocations to the Northern Province district in recent memory. The plan's Rs. 250 million town development component targets the Vavuniya urban core, covering road widening, drainage systems, and pedestrian infrastructure. A second Rs. 250 million tranche is earmarked for regional development that will fund the improvement of 36 major inter divisional roads across the district's rural zones. Rural infrastructure receives Rs. 350 million, enabling the construction and repair of 21 smaller road links , each under 500 metres , bridging isolated communities to market networks. Nine large scale bridges identified as critical transport chokepoints will receive structural rehabilitation under a dedicated Rs. 100 million budget. In a move addressing long standing energy inequality, Rs. 50 million has been allocated to extend the national grid to 695 households in the district currently without electricity. Officials from the Ceylon Electricity Board confirmed survey work for the electrification push is already underway in coordination with the Vavuniya District Secretariat. The plan was finalized following District Development Committee review meetings chaired by the Northern Province Governor, who called the allocation a 'transformational step toward equitable northern development.'
