The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), in partnership with the Department of Sri Lanka Railways, concluded major track rehabilitation and intermodal freight yard upgrades at the Port of Trincomalee today, September 24, 2026.

The overhaul replaced aging rail sleepers, reinforced heavy-haul track ballast, and installed high-capacity mobile gantry cranes to expedite bulk agricultural, mineral sand, and cement clinker transfers from port quays directly onto freight railcars. Port engineers affirmed that the upgraded rail interchange cuts vessel turnaround times by 25% while reducing heavy container truck traffic on regional highways, delivering substantial logistics cost savings for national exporters.
