In response to rising international surfer arrivals and seasonal wave patterns, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and Matara Tourism Police have completed safety infrastructure upgrades across Weligama Bay and Mirissa beach zones.

The joint project establishes upgraded observation towers staffed by certified surf lifeguards, rapid-response rescue jet skis, and clearly demarcated safe swimming channels away from hazardous rip currents. Tourism authorities emphasized that maintaining world-class water safety standards is fundamental to safeguarding overseas travelers and establishing the southern coast as a premier, secure water sports hub.
