Following increased international surf tourism across Weligama Bay, the Southern Provincial Tourism Bureau partnered with Lifesaving Sri Lanka to establish an expanded coastal safety framework. The initiative positions five permanent lifesaving watchtowers along Weligama's main surfing stretches, equipped with rescue jet-skis, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and standardized color-coded wave hazard flags. Municipal officers are also enforcing registered surfboard rental operator standards. Hotel and surf school operators endorsed the safety measures, emphasizing that professional beach monitoring preserves Weligama's reputation as South Asia's premier surf learning destination.
