Sri Lanka has achieved a major energy transition milestone with the official commissioning of its first-ever utility-scale 10MW/40MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in the Galle district, designed to buffer fluctuating power feeds from regional solar and wind farms.

Energy engineers confirmed that the advanced lithium-ion storage system provides instant grid frequency regulation, rapid spinning reserves, and peak shaving capabilities for the southern transmission corridor. Officials highlighted that the deployment significantly bolsters national renewable integration capacity, cutting fossil-fuel thermal generation dependencies across the Southern Province.
